What you'll be doing:

Due to significant company growth an opportunity has arisen for the role of Assistant Payroll Manager. This role will involve the co-ordination of the UK day to day payroll process overseeing data entry and verification, query handling and ensuring data accuracy and compliance. This will require a broad and well-rounded background in operating in both the payroll and financial accounting areas. Supported by the offshore payroll team in India the focus will be the delivery of an accurate and timely payroll service through collaboration with areas of the business to include HR and Senior Managers. As well as the timely and accurate delivery of the payroll and HMRC submissions this will include delivering clear and consistent guidance and direction to all stakeholders including the offshore payroll team, HR Business Partners and employees.

A sound knowledge of payroll rules and regulations, financial control principles and accounting practices is essential. Coordinating a specialist team working to tight internal and external deadlines within an ever changing regulatory framework is key.


  • Managing the monthly payroll to ensure payroll changes are recorded, actioned and submitted in a timely and accurate manner in line with monthly payroll and HMRC deadlines for a UK payroll of 1500-2000 plus employees
  • Reconciliation of all payroll related balance sheet control accounts in the finance and accounting systems
  • To advise the Local HR Teams, local Business and HRBPs on issues around payroll in general. This involves interpreting legislation and regulations to ensure correct advice is given and all legal requirements referring to documentation and accuracy are met and formal procedures are implemented on time.
  • To research, identify and communicate the potential payroll implications to all stakeholders of existing and proposed legislation.
  • Working with the HR, offshore payroll and finance teams to continuously review, develop and refine payroll policies and procedures
  • Providing advice and guidance on related company policies and payroll tax and legislation
  • Ensuring payroll compliance with all legislative requirements
  • Managing, preparation and submission of P11d and PSA submissions to HMRC in line with statutory reporting deadlines
  • Being the main point of contact for all escalation queries related to payroll
  • Oversee reporting on key metrics and ensuring monthly reporting is submitted on time
  • Manage Communications with HMRC and external professional advisors
  • Work with the external auditors for data provision related to payroll
  • Ensure all payroll related deductions and payments are made in line with legislative requirements both in terms of accuracy and timelines
  • Administration in conjunction with external professional advisors of international payrolls
  • Participation in all ongoing payroll related projects
  • Analysis and Reporting on payroll data
  • Ad Hoc requirements

What you'll need:

  • Accounting or payroll professional qualification
  • Strong Financial Accounting skills and experience is essential as the role includes balance sheet and P&L reconciliations
  • Comprehensive understanding of UK payroll and tax laws is required
  • Experience of managing large payrolls
  • Experience of working with offshore payroll teams would be desirable
  • Excellent organisation skills with the ability to manage workload under pressure with multiple priorities
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of payroll processes and procedures that can provide structure and support across the organisation
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills across a range of customers and external bodies
  • Project management experience that can be demonstrated in payroll system implementation
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to use own initiative but know when to seek guidance
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Professional manner, pro-active approach to work
  • Demonstrate the ability to work confidentially, remaining discreet at all times
  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively with people at all levels and across multiple disciplines
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
