You will be the Port.io authority and design lead for an enterprise internal developer platform. You will have the opportunity to hire and upskill a distributed engineering team across the UK, Portugal and India ahead of a major build phase. You will work directly with senior client stakeholders and own the platform architecture: catalogue structure, golden-path patterns, orchestration design, and integrations with ITSM, CMDB and observability. Developer adoption is how this platform will be judged, and this role is central to getting there.
What you'll be doing:
Key Responsibilities
- Team build and enablement: Help select the engineering team with the Technical Manager, then act as its Port.io authority. You will upskill engineers on the architecture, the data model (blueprints, entities, scorecards), self-service actions, Ocean integrations and RBAC.
- Platform architecture: Own the IDP solution architecture: catalogue structure, golden-path patterns, orchestration design (GitHub Actions + Temporal) and API integrations with ServiceNow, CMDB and observability.
- Client engagement: Shape roadmap and design decisions with client stakeholders, building on the MVP the client delivers in-house.
- Cross-team alignment: Align with cloud platform architects so infrastructure patterns have a clean route into the catalogue; define inner-source contribution standards and quality gates.
- Adoption and governance: Design for adoption (self-service rates, time-to-consume); establish governance for catalogue health, versioning and divisional onboarding.
What experience you'll bring:
Essential
- Port.io depth: Hands-on production Port.io delivery at enterprise scale, covering blueprints and data model design, self-service actions, scorecards, integrations and RBAC. This is the defining requirement, because the role upskills the whole team.
- Platform architecture: 10+ years in software or platform engineering including 3+ in platform engineering / IDP roles; experience designing golden paths, self-service catalogues and orchestration layers.
- Client-facing consulting: Trusted-advisor presence with senior client stakeholders: running workshops, defending designs and building roadmaps together.
- Coaching: Track record upskilling engineering teams on new platforms.
- Secure-by-default design: Designing platforms where security and quality controls sit inside the golden paths rather than being bolted on afterwards. This covers RBAC and access models, secrets handling, and approval and policy gates.
Nice to Have
- Orchestration: GitHub Actions depth, plus Temporal or a comparable durable workflow engine.
- Quality engineering: Embedding automated testing and quality gates into platform delivery.
- Enterprise integration: ITSM (ServiceNow), CMDB and observability integrations.
- Comparative platforms: Backstage, Humanitec or Harness.
Technologies & Tools
The platform environment:
- Developer portal: Port.io, or a Backstage background: catalogue, blueprints, self-service actions and scorecards, with configuration-as-code in JSON and YAML. Custom integrations use the Ocean framework in Python, plus the Port API and Terraform provider.
- Languages: TypeScript, Node.js and React, with Python for custom integrations and JQ for data mapping.
- Orchestration: GitHub Actions, with Temporal for durable workflows.
- Delivery toolchain: GitHub and Terraform, an IaC quality and security stack (Wiz, Checkov, OPA, tflint, Infracost, Terratest), and k6 performance testing running on Kubernetes.
- Integrations: ServiceNow for approvals and CMDB, observability tooling, and enterprise identity and RBAC.
